A couple of things to try:

- look in your kernel messages and/or syslog when the module is inserted, see if the driver is saying something

- see if the module has any debug switches you can turn on to get some more information

At a guess, I don't think it's loading the device firmware. I couldn't say why though.

I've had to buy a new Wireless card for my Ubuntu (Gutsy Gibbon) box. So I did some research, and found that the Edimax EW-7128G card was supported and had drivers for Linux that worked with it. This was nice, coz almost all my other cards are Edimax ones, and there's nothing like keeping things simple...

So, I plugged it in, and the Plug & Play didn't quite work - not unexpected as it didn't quite work with my Linksys WMP54G card either (which is now almost very broken - hence new card needed). So I've followed a whole load of different guides, and tried a whole load of different drivers. None of them have worked - so I'm admitting defeat & asking for help.

I downloaded the Linux drivers for the card from here:

http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.php?pl1_id=1&pl1_idSelect=support.php%3Fpl1_id%3D1%26mwsp%3D1&pd_id=1#01

and followed most of the README for the 2.6 kernel set. I had to make one change to get the make all to work, which I got from this How To guide - after that, it all went fine.

Only issue is that I can't seem to get the card to connect to my network (eth1 is the Linksys card that does connect, ra0 is the Edimax rt61 card that doesn't):Code:
Code attached... See post for details

I can use iwconfig to set the channel to 11, and the Frequency updates correctly to 2.462, but anything other than that seems to be ignored.

Anyone feel like providing any pointers??? Please?

To be honest, Bongo is unlikely to be able to help much - the issue is with the external SMTP servers you have access to. I was more interested to see if Bongo was usable with an ISP into such hardcore B&D. I've heard Orange/Wannadie also block 587 as well as 25, which is F in the H.

As for From: rewriting - I'm not convinced any RFC actually talks about doing that; if you could point me at what you were reading I'd be grateful.

My understanding was that if the From: field wasn't recognised as the authorised sender, an additional Sender: field would be added, set to the e-mail account of the authorised user.

Well, it does appear that they are following the SMTP spec - from the limited research I did (really, not that interested!) - in that you should be changing the from to say sent by the auth'd user "on behalf of" the From in the actual email - which is apparently what Outlook displays when it receives one of these emails. It'd be nicer if it left the "From:" alone and appended a "from the account of" or something not quite so retarded.

Anyways, Bongo... If it stands a chance of solving my current woes, I'm game to give anything a go at the moment. I don't like relying on work's email server for my private mail, and I won't use something that changes my email address to what is, in effect, a temporary one - I'm yay close to switching ISPs due to this one issue at the moment.

Of course, I'm still fighting to get Ubuntu to use the wireless card I purchased for it (checking that it had supported drivers first of course!) but that's a WHOLE other story!

That's actually quite interesting. I need to go through Bongo's SMTP agent (www.bongo-project.org and see if we can do all that shit - unfortunately, more and more ISPs are taking a hardcore stance on outgoing SMTP.

It's a very easy way of centralising your spam issues, I'm afraid, even though it is pretty awful behaviour.

Would you be willing to test Bongo against your Sky setup sometime in the near future? I promise you we're not nearly as fucked up to configure as postfix.
Using Google mail as an SMTP server was as easy as adding

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

to the /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd file, postmap'ing it, changing the relayhost= line in the main.cf to read "smtp.gmail.com:587" and reloading postfix.

Unfortunately, the gmail server also re-wrote the From address to the Googlemail account.

(The "How-to" guide for setting up SMTP with Sky Broadband with no blurb is further down, under "Step-by-step guide" heading)

Ok, so on the first of Feb, all of my outbound emails started failing, with the error message

<quote><user@email.com>: host smtp.sky.com[87.86.189.12] said: 550-This service is
550-http://www.sky.com/sendingemailhelp for instructions on how to change

your 550 settings. (in reply to RCPT TO command)</quote>

So, I try to work out what the hell is going on, I dig out the new SMTP server settings from the linked site (smtp.tools.sky.com) and modify my postfix config file (main.cf), changing my relay_host - and get a new, different, error message:

<quote><user@email.com>: host smtp.tools.sky.com[66.249.93.208] said: 530

MAIL FROM command)</quote>

So, now I edit my main.cf, and append the line

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

and now I get:

<quote><user@email.com>: host smtp.tools.sky.com[66.249.93.208] said: 530

5.5.1 Authentication Required 34sm1817007uga.52 (in reply to MAIL FROM

command)</quote>

And this is where the fun starts... I don't have a username and password. I never have. I phone their tech support, they tell me that I can request a forgotten username online.

While on the phone to them, I try that, and surprise surprise, it doesn't work. Nice lady goes off, speaks to some people - turns out, my account has been deactivated due to not being used... Never mind the fact I pay them good money every month for the damned service...

Anyways, that find username page now works, she says I can reset the password online & it'll all work. stupidly, I hang on up on friendly woman before checking. The suggest password page requires you to answer your secret question - which is apparently "My favourite sports person or team is: ....".

Anyone who knows me knows I don't do sports. I never had an account - so there can be no right answer. Sure enough, anything I put is wrong - so I phone back & get thru to a person with a HEAVY Indo-Asian accent - I have to ask every 3rd sentence to be repeated coz I just didn't understand it. I'm told it takes 72 hours to reset a password. I tell her it's not good enough. I'm told she can do it in 24 hours. I say it's not good enough, I've been 12 hours without email now - I want it fixed - now.

I'm told it can't be done, so I ask for their name. She says "Alex", so I ask for an identification number, and magically, I'm told that the passphrase has been reset - it will roll thru the system in 20 minutes. An hour later, everything's the same, so I unleash my tame pit-bull on them and get Sue to ring.

She goes mad - gets through to a supervisor, who cuts her off. She phones back. Long story short, she gets it all reset there and then on the phone, and she checks and she can log in. Woot.

I test send an email to myself to my Gmail account and it arrives. Huzzah. I go to sleep happy.

I check my email the following morning, and an email has been bounced back to me:

Sky have registered the fact that any of their IP range sending mail should be treated as spam - unless it goes through their mail server. I check my config and realise I'd left my relay-host commented out, so I uncomment and try again, and get the auth message back.

So, at this point, I need to enable SASL - I guess. So I dig out a few How To's on Google, and add the lines:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

to my /etc/postfix/main.cf file.

Then I create the /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd file, containing this text:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

as per the username I was given (and confirmed) with Sky last night and the password we created afterwards.

Then I changed the rights of the sasl_passwd file to root only readable, and postmap'd it and I now get:

<quote><user@email.com>: SASL authentication failed; server

smtp.tools.sky.com[66.249.93.208] said: 535 5.7.1 Credentials Rejected

13sm1832960ugb.0</quote>

I go to http://mysky.sky.com/ and log in using those details, and notice that the username, although I confirmed it all as lowercase, gets transmuted to UPPERCASE as I hit the login button. Muppets. So I go to the profile page and check, sure enough, the username is ALL IN UPPERCASE.

I change my sasl_passwd file to UPPERCASE the username and try again, and I get the same message. It takes me a while before I remember to re-postmap the passwd file - but even that doesn't help.

I dig around a bit more, come back to the first email help page they sent me to - apparently, my SMTP username is my lowercase username, with @sky.com appended to it. Niiiice. So, I change that, re-postmap the file and try again....

Now I get no Mail Delivery error, but the mail just disappears into the ether. Never arrives at its destination. I check, and it's been dropped into the Spam can:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

The reason why? Because it's no longer matching the whitelist rules, because the Sky SMTP server has nicely dis-regarded the From header on the message, and set it as mysky.username@sky.com

And sure enough, every email I send out has its From address adulterated - and changed to an email address I have NEVER checked for new mail, in the 4 years I've had it.

So I no longer use Sky's SMTP server, I route it all thru my works server, at least until I see if I can route it all thru Gmail's server.

What a bunch of fecking <size=24>twunts</size>.

If anyone has the same issues (I've included all the error messages to help Google to help you ), here's a brief step by step guide on how to set up your Ubuntu (Gutsy Gibbon in this case) box with postfix to use Sky's retarded new SMTP server:

<size=28>Step-by-step guide</size>

Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf and append the lines:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

Then create /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd containing the following lines:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

changing "username" and "password" to your Sky details and make sure only root can read the plaintext file, by running

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

Then make the .db file, so postfix can read your settings:

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

and either chown the .db file to your postfix user, or chmod it to 644 (NOT SECURE!).

Then just reload your postfix config

Code:
Code attached... See post for details

and all your email should now be sending out from your Sky mail account again.

That would've done... Or perhaps a Code:
Code attached... See post for details
check.

I'm not suggesting that they code for every eventuality, but it'd be nice to have an error that showed what was wrong in a way that's displayable(tm) - and then understandable.
[quote:7157832d77="phil"]I hate unhelpful error messages (yes yes I know the CR was char 3 of the arguments, which was invalid so functionally it's entirely correct - however what it displayed wasn't actually useful)</quote>

It would be difficult to see what useful error message it could have given without specifically hard-coding for this problem. A generic bad argument error would look something like:

ERROR: The "

" option is not a valid parameter to PHP.
