It's done in Flash. That Flash is then embedded into a webpage, which is delivered by a server, and then interpreted by your web browser.

Pretty simple really.

Oh, you want a serious response, don't you Rolling Eyes

Actually, it only works if your number doesn't begin with 0 Smile

But, I digress.

Do you really want me to spoil the magic?

Ok, spoiler ahead.

Let's take 50 as an example. 5 + 0 = 5. 50 - 5 = 45. So far, so good.

For every number in the range 50-59 (i.e, every number that starts with 5), the sums actually work out the same:

50: 5 + 0 = 5. 50 - 5 = 45
51: 5 + 1 = 6. 51 - 6 = 45
52: 5 + 2 = 7. 52 - 7 = 45

... so on, and so forth. As you increase the original number by one, you're increasing the amount you end up subtracting by one also.

So, for any number from 10-99, the process of adding the digits and then subtracting that result actually means that you end up falling back to the numbers 9, 18, 27 (actually all multiples of nine).

The number you think of, then, is always a multiple of nine, and if you look on the end chart, the "nine times table" (ick) has the same symbol attached to each number.

Of course, they then swap the symbols around each go - that way they're trying to hide the fact that it's a fix.
